About Museo Poldi Pezzoli
One of Italy's finest house museums, the private palazzo and exquisite collection of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli (1822-1879), comprising Old Master paintings by Pollaiuolo, Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, and Giovanni Bellini, plus armour, gold, porcelain, and textiles.
The Museo Poldi Pezzoli is one of the great house museums of Europe, a private palazzo on the Via Manzoni that was transformed by its owner, Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli (1822-1879), into a magnificent private collection of astonishing breadth and quality. Poldi Pezzoli, a Milanese nobleman of great wealth, spent his life acquiring Old Master paintings, medieval and Renaissance armour, decorative arts, gold and silver, textiles, and porcelain, in accordance with a nineteenth-century ideal of the complete collector. On his death he bequeathed the entire collection, palazzo, contents, and all, to the city of Milan. The collection's masterpiece is Pollaiuolo's Portrait of a Young Woman, one of the finest and most mysterious female portraits of the fifteenth century, and the museum's emblem. Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Palma il Vecchio, and Tiepolo are also represented. The armour collection is among the finest in Italy.
Did you know? Pollaiuolo's Portrait of a Young Woman at the Poldi Pezzoli, the museum's emblem, has been called "the northern Italian Mona Lisa": its subject is unidentified, its strict profile is hauntingly serene, and it has been the subject of centuries of scholarly and popular fascination.
