About Porta Nuova & Bosco Verticale

Milan's transformative new business district, featuring the iconic Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest), twin residential towers clad in 800 trees and 20,000 plants, winner of the International Highrise Award and a symbol of sustainable urban design.

Porta Nuova is Milan's great twenty-first century urban regeneration project, the transformation of a derelict former rail yard area north of the city centre into a gleaming new business, residential, and cultural district. At its heart are three striking architectural ensembles: the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) by Stefano Boeri, two residential towers rising 110 and 76 metres that are clad in tiered balconies planted with 800 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 flowering plants, creating the equivalent of a forest of 2.5 hectares in the vertical dimension. The Unicredit Tower by César Pelli (2012) is the tallest building in Italy at 231 metres. The Piazza Gae Aulenti, a circular raised urban square with fountains and retail, is the social centre of the district. Together they represent Milan's ambition to establish itself as a global metropolis for the twenty-first century.

Did you know? The Bosco Verticale's 800 trees are individually engineered, each placed in a custom-designed planter on specially reinforced balconies, with an automated irrigation system drawing on collected rainwater, and a team of arborists who access them by abseiling down the facade.
