About Brera District
Milan's most characterful neighbourhood, a dense web of narrow cobbled streets north of La Scala, home to artists' studios, independent bookshops, antique dealers, galleries, and some of the best restaurants and aperitivo bars in the city.
The Brera is Milan's most beloved neighbourhood, a dense urban village of narrow, irregularly laid streets, seventeenth-century palazzi, and a lively street life that feels authentically Milanese rather than tourist-facing. The neighbourhood takes its name from the Palazzo di Brera, a magnificent seventeenth-century building at its heart that houses the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts (still an active art school). The streets around the Palazzo di Brera are lined with the studios of working artists, independent bookshops (including several specialising in art and architecture), antique and design shops, excellent restaurants serving modern Milanese cuisine, and small bars where the aperitivo tradition is maintained with particular quality. The third Saturday of each month sees an antique market in Via Madonnina.
Did you know? In the courtyard of the Palazzo di Brera stands a famous bronze statue of Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker, nude except for a fig leaf, by Antonio Canova (1809), Napoleon initially rejected the statue as too realistic and un-heroic; it spent years in storage before ending up in Brera.
