About Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano)
One of the world's largest Gothic cathedrals, a breathtaking forest of 135 marble spires with 3,400 statues, and rooftop terraces offering panoramic views across Milan to the Alps.
The Duomo di Milano is the world's third-largest cathedral and the largest in Italy, begun in 1386 under Gian Galeazzo Visconti and taking nearly six centuries to complete, Napoleon ordered the facade finished in 1805 for his coronation as King of Italy. Built of pink-white Candoglia marble, the cathedral is a Gothic extravaganza of extraordinary complexity: 135 spires, 3,400 statues (2,245 of them externally), 52 interior columns, and stained glass windows of unparalleled extent. The famous gilded copper statue of the Madonnina crowns the central spire at 108.5 metres. The cathedral's rooftop terraces, reached by lift or 919 stairs, offer one of the great urban panoramas in Europe, with the Alps clearly visible on clear days. The Treasury Museum holds centuries of religious artworks, and the underground archaeological area reveals Roman-era ruins beneath.
Did you know? The Duomo took nearly 600 years to complete, begun in 1386, the last of its 135 spires was finished in 1965, spanning the late medieval period, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical era, and the modern age.
