About Castello Sforzesco

The vast 15th-century fortress of the Sforza dukes, housing world-class museums including Michelangelo's unfinished Pietà Rondanini and Leonardo's painted ceiling in the Sala delle Asse.

The Castello Sforzesco is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, a massive brick fortress built between 1360 and 1499 by the Visconti and Sforza dynasties. The vast courtyard complex houses some of Milan's finest museums. The highlight is Michelangelo's final work, the unfinished Pietà Rondanini, which the aged sculptor was working on in the last days of his life, a raw and profoundly moving late masterpiece very different from his polished early work. Leonardo da Vinci decorated the ceiling of the Sala delle Asse (the Room of Boards) with an extraordinary painted garden of mulberry trees and knot patterns, a major discovery restored in the 20th century. The castle also contains an Egyptian museum, a prehistoric collection, musical instruments, furniture, and the original Trivulzio Tapestries. The gardens behind (Parco Sempione) extend to the Arc of Peace.

Did you know? Michelangelo was working on the Pietà Rondanini on February 12, 1564, just six days before his death at age 88. The unfinished state is now considered integral to its profound emotional power.
