About The Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano)
Leonardo da Vinci's monumental mural (1495-98) in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of the world's most famous paintings, requiring advance booking months ahead for timed 15-minute visits.
Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, painted between 1495 and 1498 on a wall of the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is one of the most reproduced and analysed artworks in history. Leonardo chose an unusual technique, tempera and oil on plaster rather than true fresco, which allowed greater detail but caused deterioration to begin almost immediately. Despite centuries of damage, flooding, wartime bombing (the refectory walls were destroyed in 1943 but the Last Supper wall survived), and botched restorations, the work remains overwhelmingly powerful. It measures 4.6 by 8.8 metres and depicts Christ's announcement that one of his disciples will betray him, capturing the psychological reactions of all twelve apostles with extraordinary psychological insight. Visits are strictly limited to 25 people for 15 minutes; booking months in advance is essential.
Did you know? Only 25 people are allowed into the room at once for exactly 15 minutes, the strict limit was introduced to protect the fragile painting from humidity caused by human breath.
