About Ronda

One of the most dramatically situated towns in Spain, built on a sheer-sided plateau split by the 120-metre Tajo gorge, with the famous Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) spanning the gorge, spectacular views over the Serranía de Ronda, and one of the oldest bullfighting traditions in Spain.

Ronda is one of the most dramatically situated cities in Spain, a town built on a sheer-sided plateau in the Serranía de Ronda mountains, split by the dramatic Tajo gorge (120 metres deep) which is bridged by the magnificent Puente Nuevo, completed in 1793. The town has an extensive Moorish old city (La Ciudad) with a well-preserved Islamic bath and numerous historic buildings, and a newer city (El Mercadillo) north of the gorge. The Real Maestranza bullring (1785) is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant in Spain and the site of an important bullfighting tradition. Ronda is about 100 kilometres from Málaga.

Did you know? The Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) of Ronda took 42 years to build (1751-1793) and was the third attempt to bridge the Tajo gorge, the first two bridges collapsed during construction. The bridge is 98 metres high and its central arch spans 34 metres. During the Spanish Civil War, the room built inside the bridge's central tower was used as a prison, and prisoners were reportedly thrown from the bridge into the gorge.
