About La Concepción Historical Botanical Garden

A magnificent 19th-century romantic botanical garden on the northern outskirts of Málaga, created by the Loring and Heredia families with over 70 hectares of tropical and subtropical plant collections, a historic mansion, Roman sculptures, and magnificent pools, considered one of the finest romantic gardens in Spain.

La Concepción Historical Botanical Garden is one of the finest romantic gardens in Spain, a 19th-century estate on the northern outskirts of Málaga, created between 1855 and 1900 by the Loring and Heredia families, two of the most powerful industrial and banking dynasties of 19th-century Andalusia. The garden covers over 70 hectares of terraced grounds planted with tropical and subtropical trees and plants from around the world. The estate includes a 19th-century mansion, a remarkable collection of Roman archaeological pieces, monumental fountains, and a series of thematic areas. The garden was declared a Spanish Heritage of Cultural Interest site and is now managed by the city of Málaga.

Did you know? La Concepción contains one of the most remarkable individual trees in Spain: a Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) from Australia with a trunk circumference of over 25 metres and roots that spread across more than 1,000 square metres of ground. The tree was planted in the 1870s and is now one of the largest trees in Europe in terms of the area it covers. Its aerial roots and buttress roots create an almost architectural effect, like a living building.
