About Cuevas de Nerja
A network of spectacular prehistoric caves near the resort town of Nerja, containing the world's tallest known stalactite column, Paleolithic cave paintings, and vast cathedral-like chambers, discovered in 1959 and one of the most visited tourist sites in Andalusia.
The Cuevas de Nerja are a network of spectacular limestone caves near the coastal town of Nerja, about 50 kilometres east of Málaga. The caves were discovered in 1959 by a group of local boys who fell through a hole in the ground. The cave system extends for approximately 5 kilometres, with the public section covering about 1 kilometre. The caves contain spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites and feature a column that measures 32 metres, the tallest known stalactite column in the world. They also contain Paleolithic cave art including charcoal drawings of horses, deer, and goats dated to 20,000-25,000 years ago.
Did you know? The stalactite column in the Hall of the Cataclysm at Nerja stands 32 metres tall and is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest stalactite column in the world. It is technically a "column", formed when a stalactite and stalagmite met, rather than a pure stalactite or stalagmite, with a base measuring 13 by 7 metres. The formation grows approximately 1 centimetre every 100 years.
