About Walls of Lucca

The walls of Lucca, a complete ring of Renaissance ramparts about four kilometres long around the old town, with eleven bastions and a broad, tree-lined path on top for walking and cycling.

The walls were built from 1544 to the middle of the seventeenth century and are 4,223 metres long, with 11 bastions. They never faced a siege. From 1815 Duchess Maria Luisa of Bourbon turned them into a public park and promenade.

The path on top is free and open at all times, reached by ramps and stairs from the gates. Do not climb the grassy slopes. In late October or early November, Lucca Comics and Games brings huge crowds and stands to parts of the walls.
