About Château de Langeais
Langeais gives you two castles in one: a ruined tenth-century stone keep in the garden and a fifteenth-century château where Anne of Brittany married Charles the Eighth.
The site was fortified in 992 by Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, and soon attacked by Odo I, Count of Blois. Having repelled the attack, Fulk reinforced it with a stone keep whose ruins still stand. That tenth-century tower is among the earliest datable stone keeps and an early example of Romanesque military architecture. The site changed hands repeatedly between Anjou and Blois, with Fulk recapturing it in 1038, and the medieval castle was later destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years' War.
The present château was rebuilt around 1465, under Louis XI, in Flamboyant Gothic style. Its great hall staged the marriage of Anne of Brittany to Charles VIII on 6 December 1491, an event that set the union of Brittany with France in motion. Jacques Siegfried bought the château in 1886, restored it, and assembled an important collection of tapestries and furnishings before bequeathing it to the Institut de France, which owns it today. A listed Monument historique, it forms part of the UNESCO Loire Valley.
Did you know? In the great hall on 6 December 1491, Anne of Brittany married Charles the Eighth. The wedding was also politics: it set the eventual union of Brittany with France in motion.
