About Château d'Azay-le-Rideau
Azay-le-Rideau rises straight from the river Indre, an early French Renaissance house built between 1518 and 1527 and left, for political reasons, only half finished in an L-shape.
Built between 1518 and 1527 on an island in the river Indre, Azay-le-Rideau is counted among the foremost examples of early French Renaissance architecture. It was commissioned by Gilles Berthelot, Mayor of Tours and Treasurer-General of the royal finances, who bought the land in 1518. During his frequent absences his wife, Philippa Lesbahy, oversaw much of the work. Because the island ground was so damp, the foundations were driven as piles into the riverbed mud.
The house was never finished. Only the south and west wings went up, leaving the L-shaped plan seen today. In 1527, after his cousin Jacques de Beaune was executed, Berthelot fled and Francis I confiscated the unfinished château. The Biencourt family bought it in 1787 and restored it from the 1820s, and the French state acquired it in 1905 for 250,000 francs. It is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux and part of the UNESCO Loire Valley.
Did you know? Azay-le-Rideau stands on an island in the river Indre, so its builders drove the foundations as piles into the wet riverbed mud, then let the water mirror the finished walls.
