About Schynige Platte
A ridge at about 2,000 metres reached by a historic cog railway from Wilderswil, with a grandstand view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and an alpine botanical garden of wild mountain flowers.
Schynige Platte is a ridge at about 2,000 metres above Interlaken, reached by a wonderfully old-fashioned cog railway that has climbed from Wilderswil since 1893, still running original steam and electric locomotives and wooden-bodied coaches. The journey of about fifty minutes winds up some 1,400 metres to a panorama ridge between the valley of the Lütschine and Lake Brienz, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau filling the southern sky and the two lakes and Interlaken far below to the north.
At the top, beside the station and its mountain hotel, is the Schynige Platte Alpine Garden, created in 1929, where several hundred species of Swiss mountain plants grow in their natural setting, a living study of high-altitude flora run with the University of Bern. Short viewpoint trails and longer hikes toward the Faulhorn and First begin here. The railway and garden are seasonal, running roughly from June to October, so check before you go.
Did you know? The cog railway to Schynige Platte has climbed from Wilderswil since 1893 and still runs its original steam and electric locomotives and wooden-bodied carriages.
