About Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)
The 'Top of Europe': the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres, reached by a cog railway tunnelled through the Eiger and Mönch, with a glacier observatory, ice palace and the Aletsch.
The Jungfraujoch, marketed as the 'Top of Europe', is the great excursion from Interlaken: the highest railway station in Europe, at 3,454 metres, set in a saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau. It is reached by the Jungfrau Railway, which climbs from Kleine Scheidegg and spends most of its route in a tunnel bored through the Eiger and the Mönch. The idea was the Zurich industrialist Adolf Guyer-Zeller's; work began in 1896 and took sixteen years, and the first train reached the Jungfraujoch on 1 August 1912.
At the top, a glass lift rises to the Sphinx observation terrace at about 3,571 metres, with a view over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is an Ice Palace, a labyrinth of tunnels and sculptures hand-cut into the glacier from 1934, kept below freezing, and restaurants and exhibitions in the Top of Europe building. The trip is long, high and weather-dependent; the thin air can be felt, so take it gently.
