About Harder Kulm
The 'Top of Interlaken': a viewpoint at about 1,320 metres reached by funicular, with a castle-like restaurant and a Two Lakes Bridge platform looking down on both lakes and the Jungfrau.
Harder Kulm, the 'Top of Interlaken', is the town's own viewpoint, at about 1,320 metres on the forested Harder ridge directly above Interlaken. It is reached by the Harderbahn funicular, which opened in May 1908 and climbs in a long curve so as not to scar the hillside. At the top stand a castle-like pavilion restaurant with a pointed tower and the Two Lakes Bridge, the Zwei-Seen-Steg, a viewing platform built in 2011 with a glass panel in its floor.
The view is the point of the trip. From the platform you look down on the whole Bödeli, the flat land with Interlaken and Unterseen, with Lake Thun on one side and Lake Brienz on the other, and across to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the south. A local folk tale tells of the Hardermandli, a monk turned to stone in the cliff face, said to glare down at the town; and near the valley station an Alpine wildlife park keeps ibex. The funicular runs seasonally, so check before you go.
Did you know? Harder Kulm, at about 1,320 metres, is reached by the Harderbahn funicular of 1908, whose track was curved in a long arc so as not to scar the hillside.
