About Maison Tavel

The oldest surviving house in Geneva, rebuilt after the 1334 fire, now a museum of the city's history with a remarkable scale model of Geneva as it appeared in 1850.

Maison Tavel, "Tavel House", is the oldest surviving secular building in Geneva, dating from 1334. Located in the heart of the old town on the Rue du Puits-Saint-Pierre, the building was constructed after a devastating fire destroyed much of the city's medieval centre. It has served many purposes over the centuries: private residence of the noble Tavel family, then various commercial uses before eventually being acquired by the city as a museum. The building itself is architecturally significant, a Gothic stone house with a distinctive carved frieze and heraldic decoration on its façade. As a museum, Maison Tavel explores the history of Geneva from the medieval period through the 19th century, with collections of furniture, everyday objects, religious art, maps, documents, and historical photographs. The museum's most celebrated exhibit is the extraordinary scale model of Geneva as it appeared around 1850, shortly before the city's 19th-century transformation: a precise, detailed miniature of the entire pre-modern city, showing the fortification walls, the medieval street pattern, and the densely packed buildings within the walls. The model was created by Auguste Magnin and is considered one of the finest historical urban models in existence.

Did you know? Maison Tavel was rebuilt after the 1334 fire, making it the oldest surviving secular building in Geneva, a survivor of nearly 700 years of urban change, fire, and modernisation.
