About Palais Wilson
The former League of Nations building from 1875, now the United Nations Human Rights headquarters, named after US President Woodrow Wilson who championed the League.
The Palais Wilson on the Geneva lakefront is one of the most historically layered buildings in Switzerland, a grand 19th-century hotel that was repurposed as the first headquarters of the League of Nations and now serves as the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The building was constructed in 1875 as the Hôtel National, one of the grandest hotels in Geneva serving the wealthy European clientele who frequented the city. In 1920, it became the first headquarters of the newly established League of Nations, the world's first major international governance organisation, before the League moved to the purpose-built Palais des Nations in the 1930s. After various uses, the building was renamed Palais Wilson in 1924 in honour of US President Woodrow Wilson, the principal architect of the League of Nations concept. Today it houses the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, making it the symbolic home of one of the most important principles in international law: that all human beings have inherent rights that must be protected. The lakeside position of the building offers spectacular views, and its history encapsulates Geneva's extraordinary role in international governance over the past century.
Did you know? The Palais Wilson was originally built as the Hôtel National in 1875, served as the League of Nations' first headquarters in 1920, and is now the UN Human Rights Office.
