About Mercado dos Lavradores

Funchal's farmers' market, a 1940 building of tiled panels and arcaded galleries, where flower sellers in Madeiran costume, tropical fruit and the black scabbardfish fill the halls.

The Mercado dos Lavradores, the farmers' market, is the lively heart of everyday Funchal, a market of fruit, flowers, vegetables and fish in the city centre near the old town. Designed by the architect Edmundo Tavares and opened in November 1940, it is a fine example of Estado Novo architecture, between Art Deco and Modernism, with azulejo tile panels painted by João Rodrigues on its facade, entrance and fish hall. Around an open courtyard of patterned Portuguese pavement run arcaded, galleried wings beneath a square tower bearing the city arms.

Flower sellers, many in the colourful traditional Madeiran costume, set out birds of paradise and orchids; the stalls pile up bananas, custard apples, passion fruit and other tropical produce. In the separate fish hall, on stone counters, lies the island's signature catch: the long, black, fierce-looking scabbardfish, espada, hauled from the deep sea off Madeira. On the night of 23 December the market and its bars stay open all night for carols and conviviality, a beloved Funchal tradition.
