About Fortaleza de São Tiago

A bright yellow 17th-century sea fort at the edge of the old town, begun in 1614 to defend Funchal from pirates, with corner turrets guarding the shore beside São Tiago beach.

The Fortaleza de São Tiago, the Fort of Saint James, stands on the seafront at the eastern edge of the Zona Velha, its bright yellow walls and corner sentry turrets a landmark of the old town shore. Work began around 1614 under the royal master builder Jerónimo Jorge, and the first phase was finished in 1637; a second campaign in the 18th century added a gate dated 1767. Built to defend Funchal against the pirate and corsair raids that plagued the island, it marked the end of the city wall.

Over the centuries it quartered British troops during the Napoleonic Wars, sheltered flood victims in 1803, and served as a barracks until 1992, when it passed to the Madeira regional government. It later housed a museum of contemporary art until 2015. Note that the fort is currently closed to visitors apart from its restaurant, so it is best enjoyed from the outside, where its yellow bastions rise straight from the sea wall above the pebbly Praia de São Tiago.

Did you know? The fort was begun around 1614 to defend Funchal against the pirate and corsair raids of the age; French corsairs had sacked the city for days in 1566.
