About Uffizi Gallery
One of the oldest and most celebrated art museums in the world, home to Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Leonardo's Annunciation, and masterworks by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio.
The Uffizi Gallery occupies a U-shaped Renaissance palace commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1560, designed by Giorgio Vasari as administrative offices, 'uffizi' simply means offices. Francesco I de' Medici opened the upper loggia as an art gallery in 1581, making it one of the first public museums in the Western world. In 1737 the last Medici heir, Anna Maria Luisa, signed the Patto di Famiglia, bequeathing the entire collection to Florence in perpetuity.
The galleries trace Italian painting from Cimabue in the 13th century to 18th-century Venice. Botticelli's Birth of Venus (c.1484) and Primavera (c.1477) dominate their hall. Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Doni Tondo, Raphael's Madonna of the Goldfinch, and Caravaggio's Medusa and Bacchus make this the single richest concentration of Renaissance masterpieces anywhere on earth.
Did you know? The building was originally designed as magistrates' offices, "uffizi" means offices, and was never intended to be a museum.
