About Michelangelo's David – Galleria dell'Accademia

Home to Michelangelo's colossal David (1504), the 5.17-metre marble masterpiece widely considered the greatest sculpture ever carved.

Michelangelo carved the David between 1501 and 1504 from a single block of white Carrara marble that had been quarried decades earlier and left abandoned, fellow sculptors deemed it too damaged and narrow. Michelangelo saw something different. Working alone for over two years, he produced a figure 5.17 metres tall depicting the Biblical hero David in the moment before his confrontation with Goliath, alert, taut, his sling in hand.

Originally placed in the Piazza della Signoria in 1504, the statue was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia in 1873 to protect it from the elements, and a marble replica was installed in its place. The Tribune, the purpose-built domed hall constructed to house the David, allows visitors to view the statue from all angles. Notice the oversized hands and head, calibrated for viewing from below, and the extraordinary tension in the face and neck.

Did you know? The original marble block had been abandoned for 35 years as unusable, Michelangelo was the third sculptor to attempt it, and the only one to succeed.
