About Brunelleschi's Dome & the Duomo
The largest masonry dome ever built (1436), Brunelleschi's engineering masterpiece crowning the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with 463 steps to the lantern and Vasari's Last Judgement fresco inside.
The dome of Florence Cathedral, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the defining symbol of the city and one of the great engineering achievements of all time. When construction of the cathedral began in 1296 under Arnolfo di Cambio, the builders left the crossing open, intending a great dome, but had no idea how to build one of the required size. The drum sat open to the sky for over a century.
In 1418 a competition was held. Filippo Brunelleschi won with a revolutionary double-shell design requiring no temporary wooden centering, a feat previously thought impossible. Using a herringbone brick pattern and an ingenious system of internal chains, he completed the dome in 1436 at an inner diameter of 42.6 metres. Climbing the 463 steps between the two shells to the lantern reveals Vasari and Zuccari's vivid Last Judgement fresco covering the interior of the dome, and panoramic views across Florence.
Did you know? Brunelleschi built the dome without any wooden centering framework, an engineering feat previously considered impossible for a dome of this size.
