About Dijon Owl Trail (Sentier de la Chouette)

Dijon's self-guided walking trail through the old town, marked by bronze owl markers on the pavement, connecting 22 of the city's most important historic sites, the ideal way to discover the ducal city on foot.

The Sentier de la Chouette (Owl Trail) is Dijon's famous self-guided walking tour of its historic old town, named after the famous carved owl on the wall of Notre-Dame church. The 3.5-kilometre route is marked by a series of bronze owl markers (chouettes) embedded in the pavement and connects 22 of the city's most important historic sites, taking visitors from the Place Darcy through the medieval heart of the city to all the major monuments: Notre-Dame, the ducal palace, the Place de la Libération, the major private mansions, the Sainte-Bénigne cathedral, and the Well of Moses at the Chartreuse de Champmol. The trail takes approximately 3 hours to complete at a leisurely pace, though dedicated visitors will want to spend much longer inside the individual monuments. Free trail maps are available from the tourist office at the Place Darcy. The owl is Dijon's city symbol, appearing on wine labels, street signs, shop fronts, and civic communications throughout the city.

Did you know? The Sentier de la Chouette was created in 1993 as one of the first formally marked self-guided city walks in France, it predates the fashion for bronze pavement markers that has since spread to dozens of French cities.
