About Historic Hotels Particuliers (Dijon's Renaissance Quarter)
Dijon's medieval and Renaissance old town contains over 300 classified historic buildings, private mansions (hôtels particuliers) in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, creating one of the richest concentrations of historic architecture in France.
The old town of Dijon contains one of the most remarkable concentrations of medieval and Renaissance civic and private architecture in France. Over 300 buildings are listed or classified as historic monuments, and walking through the streets of the old town, particularly around the Rue de la Chouette, Rue Verrerie, Rue Chaudronnerie, and Place des Ducs, is like a survey course in the architecture of France from the 15th to the 18th century. The most notable individual buildings include the Hôtel de Vogüé (1607-1614), considered the finest Renaissance private mansion in Dijon, with its Flemish-style courtyard loggia; the Hôtel Aubriot (14th century), one of the oldest surviving private buildings in Dijon; the Hôtel Chambellan (1490), with its extraordinary Gothic spiral staircase and loggia in the courtyard; the Maison Milsand (1561), with an exceptional Renaissance façade covered in carved arabesques; and dozens of other well-preserved 16th and 17th-century townhouses. The result is a remarkably intact medieval and Renaissance urban fabric that gives Dijon its distinctive architectural character.
Did you know? The Hôtel Chambellan's spiral staircase features a carved hand holding a basket at the top of the central column, a craftsman's signature from around 1490, the only record of the unknown mason who built it.
