About Iglesia de San Miguel
One of the 'Fernandine churches' built after the 1236 Reconquista, 14 Gothic churches erected on the sites of Moorish mosques throughout Córdoba, with distinctive mixed Romanesque-Gothic architecture and bars in the porticoes that form part of daily Córdoba life.
San Miguel is one of the 14 'Fernandine churches', the Gothic churches built in Córdoba between 1236 and the early 14th century on the sites of the main mosques of the city's different neighbourhoods. The churches were built at the command of Fernando III (Ferdinand III), the king who conquered Córdoba from the Moors in 1236, as part of the programme to Christianise the city's religious landscape. San Miguel is notable for its Romanesque-influenced architecture, the transitional period between Romanesque and Gothic, and for the bar ('taberna') that occupies the portico outside the main entrance, a characteristically Córdoba fusion of sacred and profane that makes the church's exterior one of the most sociable spaces in the city.
Did you know? The 14 Fernandine churches of Córdoba were all built on the sites of the main neighbourhood mosques, which were in turn often built on the sites of earlier Visigothic churches, meaning that each one occupies a site of continuous sacred use from the early medieval period through to the present day, a cycle of religious appropriation and reuse spanning nearly 1,500 years.
