About Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium

One of Belgium's greatest museum complexes, housing centuries of masterworks including Bruegel, Rubens, and the world's largest Magritte collection in the adjacent Magritte Museum.

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium form one of the oldest and most comprehensive art museum complexes in the world, founded by Napoleon in 1801. The complex encompasses several interconnected museums in the heart of Brussels including the Old Masters Museum, the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum, the Fin-de-Siècle Museum, and the world-renowned Magritte Museum.

The collection spans over 20,000 works from the 15th century to the present day. Flemish Primitives, Bruegel the Elder and Younger, Rubens, Jordaens, and Van Dyck are all superbly represented. The highlight for many visitors is the superb collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder paintings, including "The Fall of Icarus" and "The Census at Bethlehem", among the largest in the world. The museum complex sits alongside the Place Royale and the Palais Royal, and entrance to most sections can be combined on a single ticket.

Did you know? The museum was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801, making it one of the oldest public art museums in the world still in continuous operation.
