About Grand-Place

Brussels' UNESCO-listed central square, surrounded by stunning 17th-century guild houses, considered by Victor Hugo to be the most beautiful square in the world.

The Grand-Place is Brussels' beating heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, widely regarded as one of the most magnificent town squares in the world. Flanked by the Gothic Town Hall, the neo-Gothic Maison du Roi, and a brilliant ensemble of Baroque guild houses rebuilt after the French bombardment of 1695, every facade tells a story of wealth, rivalry, and civic pride.

Each guild house carries its own name and gilded allegorical sculptures: La Louve, Le Roi d'Espagne, Le Cornet, L'Étoile. The Town Hall, begun in 1402, is a masterpiece of Brabantine Gothic, its 96-metre spire topped by a golden Saint Michael. Victor Hugo, exiled in Brussels in the 1850s, called the Grand-Place "the most beautiful square in the world." Every two years in August, 700,000 begonias form a spectacular living Flower Carpet across the cobblestones.

Did you know? The entire Grand-Place was rebuilt in just four years after being almost totally destroyed by French artillery bombardment in August 1695.
