About Memling in Sint-Jan Museum

A former medieval hospital housing Hans Memling's extraordinary 15th-century altarpieces and reliquary, displayed in one of Europe's best-preserved medieval hospital buildings.

The Sint-Janshospitaal (Hospital of Saint John) was founded in the 12th century and served as a working medical institution until 1978, making it one of the oldest functioning hospitals in Europe. Today its medieval wards house the Memling Museum, dedicated to the Bruges-based Flemish master Hans Memling (c.1430–1494). The collection centres on six masterpieces Memling painted for the hospital's chapel, including the magnificent Shrine of Saint Ursula, a tiny gilded reliquary shaped like a Gothic chapel, with six painted miniature panels depicting the legend of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgin martyrs. Also displayed are Memling's monumental Triptych of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist (1479) and the tender Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine. The ancient hospital wards themselves are a remarkable sight.
