About Burg Square

The civic and administrative heart of Bruges, dominated by the Gothic Town Hall of 1376 and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, with a remarkable ensemble of medieval and Renaissance architecture.

The Burg Square (Burg) is Bruges's civic centre, a remarkable architectural ensemble that reveals the city's layered history from the medieval to the Baroque period. The square takes its name from a fortified castle (burg) that was established here by Count Baldwin Iron-Arm in the 9th century, around which the medieval city grew. Today the square is framed by four buildings of very different periods: the Gothic Town Hall of 1376, the oldest in the Benelux; the Basilica of the Holy Blood; the Renaissance-style Old Civil Registry (1534); and the 18th-century New Courthouse. Each facade tells a different chapter of Bruges's history. The square is slightly smaller and more intimate than the nearby Markt, giving it a more concentrated architectural drama.
