About Esplanade des Quinconces
One of the largest public squares in Europe at 12 hectares, dominated by the dramatic 1902 Monument aux Girondins fountain, Bordeaux's grand civic showpiece.
The Esplanade des Quinconces is one of the largest public squares in Europe, covering an extraordinary 12 hectares on the banks of the Garonne between the Jardin Public and the historic city centre. The dominant feature is the Monument aux Girondins, a dramatic bronze ensemble erected in 1902 to commemorate the Girondins, the moderate republican faction executed during the Reign of Terror in 1793-1794. The monument's central column rises 43 metres, topped by a figure of Liberty breaking her chains; at its base, triumphal bronze groups represent Eloquence and Truth conquering Discord and Lies. The esplanade hosts Bordeaux's major outdoor events, fairs, and the famous Fête du Vin wine festival, and its tree-lined avenues offer pleasant promenades toward the Garonne waterfront.
Did you know? At 12 hectares, the Esplanade des Quinconces is the largest public square in France and one of the largest in Europe, you could fit the Place de la Bourse inside it six times over.
