About Chartrons District
Bordeaux's historic wine merchants' district, once home to Dutch, English, and Irish wine traders, now a vibrant neighbourhood with antique shops and Sunday markets.
The Chartrons district is one of the most characterful and historically interesting neighbourhoods in Bordeaux. From the 17th century onward, this stretch of the Garonne bank north of the city centre became the base for the foreign wine merchants, predominantly Dutch, English, Irish, and Hanseatic German traders, who settled here to manage Bordeaux's wine export trade. The elegant townhouses they built, still lining the Cours Xavier Arnozan and the Rue Notre-Dame, reflect the considerable wealth these merchants accumulated. Today, the Chartrons has evolved into Bordeaux's most eclectic neighbourhood: antique shops, independent designers, galleries, organic wine merchants, and excellent restaurants share the streets with the original trading houses. The Sunday Chartrons flea market is one of the most enjoyable markets in southern France.
Did you know? Irish wine merchant families like the Bartons and the Lynchs settled in the Chartrons and gave their names to Bordeaux châteaux still trading today, including Château Lynch-Bages and Château Barton.
