About Jardin Public
Bordeaux's beloved 18th-century public garden in French formal style, home to a Natural History Museum, a puppet theatre, and a charming children's playground.
The Jardin Public is the green heart of Bordeaux, a beautifully maintained public garden of 10 hectares that has served the city since the 18th century. Originally created in 1746 on the initiative of Intendant Tourny as a formal French garden, it was redesigned in the English landscape style in the 19th century before returning to a more structured formal layout. Today it combines formal allées, a charming lake, a botanical garden section, and a natural landscape area. The Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Bordeaux is housed in a fine building on the garden's edge. The jardin is also home to a traditional puppet theatre (Guignol) that has performed on summer afternoons for generations of Bordelais children, and a café terrace where adults can watch the world go by while the children play in the excellent playground.
Did you know? The Jardin Public's Guignol puppet theatre has been performing traditional French puppet shows for children on summer afternoons since the 19th century, one of Bordeaux's most beloved traditions.
