About Château Angélus
A Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A, promoted to the top tier in 2012, named for the three church bells that can be heard from the vineyard, and famous for its dramatic, instantly recognisable label and the powerful, opulent wines that have made it one of Bordeaux's most celebrated addresses.
Château Angélus is one of the most remarkable success stories in modern Bordeaux, an estate that was a respectable but relatively unremarkable Premier Grand Cru Classé B until the de Boüard de Laforest family, under the leadership of Hubert de Boüard, began a dramatic improvement in quality and marketing from the late 1980s onwards. The wine became increasingly celebrated through the 1990s and 2000s, receiving high scores from international critics and becoming one of the most fashionable bottles in Bordeaux. In 2012, Angélus was promoted from Premier Grand Cru Classé B to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the Saint-Émilion classification revision, one of only four estates to hold this highest status. The name comes from a remarkable coincidence: from the Angélus vineyard, three local church bells can be heard simultaneously at the ringing of the Angelus (a Catholic prayer said three times daily at the sound of the church bells).
Did you know? The name "Angélus" comes from the fact that three different church bells can be heard simultaneously from the vineyard, the bells of Saint-Martin de Mazerat, Saint-Émilion, and Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyres, which ring at the same time three daily for the Angelus prayer.
