About Palazzo Poggi & University Museums

A 16th-century palace now housing remarkable university museums including cosmography rooms with extraordinary ceiling frescoes, natural history, nautical instruments, and early anatomy collections.

Palazzo Poggi was built in the mid-16th century for Giovanni Poggi, a wealthy Bolognese noble. In 1711 it became the seat of the Istituto delle Scienze, the Institute of Sciences, founded by Luigi Ferdinando Marsili, the great Bolognese polymathic scientist. Today the palace houses the Sistema Museale di Ateneo, the university museum system, encompassing one of the most extraordinary collections of scientific artefacts in Italy. The highlight is the Marsili Halls with their painted walls and ceilings depicting maps, navigation instruments, and celestial charts. The cosmography rooms with their ceiling fresco maps of the world are unique in Italy. The collections include anatomical wax models (some of the finest in existence), natural history specimens, ship models, military architecture drawings, and early physics instruments. The complex also includes the historic observatory and meteorological station established by Marsili in the early 18th century.

Did you know? The ceiling fresco maps at Palazzo Poggi (1550s) show the entire world as known at the time, including the newly discovered Americas, painted to be the most accurate maps of their era.
