About Santo Stefano Complex
Seven interconnected Romanesque churches spanning the 5th to 16th centuries, known as "Jerusalem in Bologna", one of the most atmospheric medieval complexes in Italy.
The Santo Stefano complex, also known as Sette Chiese (Seven Churches), is one of the most extraordinary religious monuments in Italy. The complex consists of seven interconnected churches built between the 5th and 16th centuries, each with its own history, character, and sacred significance, yet flowing one into another in a maze of ancient chapels, crypts, cloisters, and courtyards. The complex was conceived as a replica of the Holy Land in Bologna, a "Jerusalem" where pilgrims who could not make the journey to the real Jerusalem could experience the sacred geography of the Passion of Christ in miniature. The central octagonal church of Sant'Egidio corresponds to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the courtyard between it and the church of Santi Vitale e Agricola contains a basin called the Pilate's Pool. The complex is one of the oldest Christian foundations in Bologna, built on the site of an ancient Roman temple to Isis, and the layers of history here, pagan, early Christian, medieval, Renaissance, are extraordinarily rich.
Did you know? The round church at the heart of Santo Stefano was built as a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a surrogate pilgrimage site for those who could not travel to the Holy Land.
