About Archiginnasio Palace
The 16th-century main building of the University of Bologna, its walls covered in thousands of coats of arms of former students and professors, and home to the famous Anatomical Theatre.
The Archiginnasio Palace, built between 1562 and 1563 by Antonio Morandi, was the first permanent home of the University of Bologna. Before its construction, the university had no fixed location, lectures were held wherever space could be found. The building is extraordinary for its decoration: every surface of the interior walls is covered with the coats of arms and inscriptions of students and professors who passed through the university over several centuries, creating a visual encyclopaedia of European intellectual life. Today there are over 6,000 coats of arms carved in stone and painted on wood. The palace also houses the extraordinary Anatomical Theatre, built in 1637 by Antonio Levanti, where human dissection was carried out in front of audiences of students and nobles. The theatre is carved entirely from wood and is one of the most beautiful scientific rooms in Italy. The palace now functions as Bologna's municipal library.
Did you know? The Archiginnasio walls are covered with over 6,000 coats of arms from students and professors spanning five centuries of European scholarship.
