About University of Bologna
Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna is the oldest university in the Western world, the birthplace of modern legal education, and still one of Europe's most prestigious institutions.
The University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum, was founded in 1088, making it the oldest university in the Western world. It began as a school of law, driven by a new demand to understand and apply the rediscovered Justinian Code of Roman law. Scholars and students from across Europe flocked to Bologna, creating the vibrant intellectual community that gave the city its nickname, "La Dotta", the Learned. By the 13th century, the university had thousands of students and attracted some of the greatest minds of the medieval world. The institution's organisational model, with professors, faculties, degrees, examinations, and academic ceremonies, was copied by universities across Europe and became the template for higher education worldwide. Dante, Petrarch, Thomas Becket, and Nicolaus Copernicus all passed through Bologna as students or teachers. Today the university has over 80,000 students and remains one of Europe's leading research universities.
