The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna is housed in the former Jesuit complex of Sant'Ignazio and is the most important art museum in Emilia-Romagna. The collection traces the development of Bolognese painting from its medieval origins through the Renaissance and into the Baroque period. Its greatest pride is the room dedicated to Raphael, which contains the Estasi di Santa Cecilia, the Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia, considered one of the finest paintings in Italy. The museum is also the home of the most comprehensive collection of works by the Carracci family, Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico, who founded the Carracci Academy in Bologna in 1582 and revolutionised European painting, giving birth to the Baroque style that would dominate European art for the next century. Other highlights include major works by Guercino, Guido Reni, Domenichino, and the extraordinary altarpieces and devotional paintings that represent the full flowering of the Bolognese school.
