The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in October 1997 and instantly transformed the city. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the building's undulating titanium panels and glass curtains stretch across 24,000 square metres on the banks of the Nervión. The structure is widely considered one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century. The permanent collection features major works by Richard Serra, his Torqued Ellipses installation fills an entire gallery, alongside Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor. Outside, Koons's Puppy, a 12-metre topiary of a West Highland Terrier covered in 38,000 flowers, has become the museum's most beloved icon. Louise Bourgeois's Maman, a towering bronze spider, guards the entrance. The museum was the centrepiece of Bilbao's remarkable urban regeneration, generating over 160 million euros in its first year alone.
