About San Mamés Stadium
Athletic Club de Bilbao's iconic cathedral of football, rebuilt in 2013, where only players of Basque origin are fielded, a unique policy in world football.
San Mamés, 'La Catedral', is the home of Athletic Club de Bilbao, one of the most storied and unique football clubs in the world. The current stadium, opened in 2013, holds 53,289 spectators and replaced the original 1913 ground on the same site. Athletic Club has a globally unique policy of fielding only players of Basque origin, born or raised in the Basque Country or Navarre, or with Basque parentage. Despite this restriction, the club has never been relegated from Spain's top division La Liga. Athletic has won eight Spanish league titles and 24 Copa del Rey trophies. The club is deeply interwoven with Basque cultural identity; a match day at San Mamés, with the red-and-white stripes of the rojiblancas filling the stands, is one of the great sporting and cultural experiences of Spain.
Did you know? Athletic Club de Bilbao has never been relegated from La Liga despite fielding only players of Basque origin, the only major European club with such a policy.
