The Vizcaya Bridge, locally known as the Puente Colgante (Hanging Bridge), was built in 1893 to connect the municipalities of Portugalete and Getxo across the Nervión estuary, about 12 kilometres downstream from Bilbao. Designed by Alberto de Palacio with the assistance of Gustave Eiffel's company, it is the world's oldest transporter bridge still in operation, carrying cars and passengers in a gondola that hangs from the high bridge deck by cables and glides across the water. The structure stands 45 metres tall. In 2006, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first industrial structure to receive this honour in the Basque Country, in recognition of its pioneering engineering innovation. Visitors can ride in the gondola or walk across the high deck for panoramic views of the estuary and the Atlantic beyond.
