About Museum Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, a narrow island in the Spree River holding five world-class museums spanning 6,000 years of human art and civilisation, Berlin's undisputed cultural heart.

Museum Island is the northern tip of a small island formed by two branches of the River Spree in the heart of Berlin. Between 1824 and 1930, five major museums were built here to house the Prussian royal collections: the Altes Museum (1830), the Neues Museum (1855), the Alte Nationalgalerie (1876), the Bode Museum (1904), and the Pergamon Museum (1930). Together they form one of the most extraordinary concentrations of artistic and archaeological treasures in the world, covering everything from ancient Egypt and Babylon to Greek and Roman antiquity, Byzantine art, 19th-century European painting, and Islamic art. Museum Island was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 in recognition of its outstanding universal value. A master plan is currently underway to connect all five museums with a new archaeological promenade beneath and between the buildings, allowing visitors to move seamlessly between institutions for the first time.

Did you know? Museum Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, one of the very few museum complexes in the world to receive this distinction.
