About Charlottenburg Palace

Berlin's largest and finest Baroque palace, built in the 17th century for Queen Sophie Charlotte, with gilded state apartments, the celebrated Porcelain Cabinet, and extensive formal gardens.

Charlottenburg Palace is the largest surviving royal palace in Berlin, stretching almost 500 metres across its main facade. It began as a comparatively modest summer residence commissioned in 1695 by Elector Frederick III for his wife Sophie Charlotte of Hanover. The palace grew dramatically after Frederick crowned himself the first King of Prussia in 1701, with successive expansions adding the distinctive tower with its gilded Fortune weathervane, the grand orangery wing, and the New Wing. The interior apartments, the Porcelain Cabinet with its floor-to-ceiling display of 2,700 blue-and-white Chinese and Japanese pieces, the Golden Gallery, the Crown Prince's apartments, represent some of the finest surviving Baroque and Rococo interiors in Germany. The formal French baroque garden extends behind the palace, adorned with statuary and a beautiful belvedere teahouse. The palace was heavily damaged in 1943 and meticulously reconstructed after the war.

Did you know? The palace was named after Queen Sophie Charlotte of Hanover, who died at just 36 in 1705, she was a philosopher, musician, and friend of Leibniz.
