About Berlin Cathedral

The imposing Protestant cathedral of 1905 on Museum Island, home to the Hohenzollern dynasty crypt with 94 royal sarcophagi, and offering a rewarding panoramic climb to the dome.

The Berlin Cathedral, Berliner Dom, is the largest Protestant church in Germany and the principal church of the Prussian Hohenzollern dynasty. The present building, designed by Julius Carl Raschdorff in an ornate Italian High Renaissance style, was completed in 1905 on the orders of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who wanted a church that could rival St Peter's in Rome in scale and grandeur. Its imposing copper-green dome, rising 98 metres, is one of the defining elements of the Berlin skyline. Below the main church, the Hohenzollern Crypt houses 94 sarcophagi and urns containing members of the Hohenzollern dynasty spanning four centuries, including the bronze sarcophagus of the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm and the ornate tomb of Frederick I of Prussia. The dome gallery is open to visitors, offering a 270-step climb rewarded with panoramic views over Museum Island, the Spree, and the city centre.

Did you know? The Hohenzollern Crypt beneath the cathedral contains 94 royal sarcophagi spanning four centuries of Prussian dynastic history, including the parents of Frederick the Great.
