About Fondation Beyeler

A world-class private art museum in the village of Riehen, designed by Renzo Piano, housing exceptional works by Monet, Rothko, Warhol, Bacon, and Giacometti in natural light.

The Fondation Beyeler is widely regarded as one of the finest private art museums in the world, a remarkable achievement in building, collection, and presentation that has established the village of Riehen, just outside Basel, as one of the most important museum destinations in Europe. The foundation was established by the legendary Basel art dealer Ernst Beyeler and his wife Hildy, who assembled one of the most outstanding private art collections of the 20th century over five decades. The building was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, one of his masterworks, and opened in 1997. The long, low structure of travertine stone and glass is integrated into the landscape of a 19th-century villa park, with north-facing skylights that flood the galleries with the soft, even natural light that makes the collection sing. The collection comprises about 200 works of extraordinary quality: Monet's late water-lily paintings of transcendent beauty; Francis Bacon's visceral triptychs; Mark Rothko's colour-field paintings; Andy Warhol's iconic pop images; Alberto Giacometti's elongated bronze figures; and exceptional works by Picasso, Mondrian, Klee, and many others. The surrounding parkland includes works by outdoor sculpture. Temporary exhibitions of exceptional quality complement the permanent collection.

Did you know? Renzo Piano's Fondation Beyeler building has north-facing skylights specifically designed to flood the galleries with optimal natural light, a feature that dramatically enhances how the paintings look.
