About Basel Münster

Basel's magnificent red sandstone Gothic cathedral, where the great humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam is buried, with a terrace overlooking a sweeping bend of the Rhine.

Basel Münster, the Basler Münster, is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in the German-speaking world, built in red Vosges sandstone that gives it a warm, distinctive colour unlike any other cathedral in Switzerland. Construction of the present church began around 1170 in the 12th century, replacing an earlier minster consecrated in 1019, and the building was substantially completed by the late 14th century, combining Romanesque foundations with predominantly Gothic superstructure. The cathedral is distinguished by its four towers, its richly carved Romanesque west portal (the Galluspforte), and its magnificent stained-glass windows. The cathedral's terrace, the Pfalz, extends behind the church to the edge of the Rhine gorge and provides one of the most dramatic urban views in Switzerland: a sweeping Rhine panorama with the green hills of Germany and Alsace rising beyond the water. The most famous occupant of the Münster's crypt is Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, the great humanist scholar who made Basel his base of operations and died here in 1536. His tomb is in the north aisle, a simple but deeply moving memorial to one of the most influential thinkers of the Renaissance. The Münster also preserves important medieval art and was once home to the celebrated treasury of Basel Cathedral.

Did you know? Erasmus of Rotterdam, the greatest humanist scholar of the Renaissance, made Basel his primary home and died here in 1536, his tomb in the Münster is one of the most historically significant in Switzerland.
