About Old Town (Grossbasel)
Basel's beautifully preserved medieval centre, dominated by the striking red-painted Town Hall of 1514 and Marktplatz, with guildhalls, fountains, and cobblestone lanes.
Grossbasel, Greater Basel, is the western, older portion of the city situated on the higher left bank of the Rhine, and its medieval old town is one of the best preserved in German-speaking Switzerland. The heart of the old town is Marktplatz, dominated by the spectacular Rathaus, Town Hall, whose vivid red-painted façade with orange-red frescoes, arcaded loggia, and Gothic ornamentation makes it arguably the most striking town hall in Switzerland. The current building dates primarily from 1514, with later additions, and the painted decoration was substantially renewed in the 19th century. Wednesday and Saturday markets in Marktplatz have been held for centuries and continue today. The streets surrounding the Rathaus, particularly the Spalenberg, the Freie Strasse, and the Gerbergasse, preserve an excellent collection of medieval and Renaissance guild houses, patrician residences, and monumental fountains. The Spalentor, one of three surviving medieval gates, is the most beautiful gate in Basel and one of the finest examples of Gothic defensive architecture in Switzerland. The old town culminates at the Münster on its hill above the Rhine, the cathedral terrace providing the finest panorama in the city.
Did you know? Basel's Rathaus has been painted its distinctive vivid red since the 16th century, the colour is an assertive statement of civic confidence and Basel's role as a major commercial centre.
