About Monastiraki Square

Athens' loudest crossroads, where a 1759 Ottoman mosque, a tiny Byzantine church and an ancient river glimpsed through the metro floor all share one relentlessly busy square.

Monastiraki Square is the busy hub of the Monastiraki district in central Athens. Its name means 'little monastery' and refers to the Byzantine Pantanassa church on the square, the surviving remnant of a once larger monastery. On the square stands the Tzistarakis Mosque, built in 1759 by the Ottoman governor Mustapha Agha Tzistarakis. After Greek independence the former mosque served many roles, including an assembly hall, a venue for a royal ball honouring King Otto in 1834, and later a barracks, prison and storehouse. Since 1973 it has housed the V. Kyriazopoulos ceramics collection.

The northern side of the square is bordered by the ruins of Hadrian's Library, built in the second century AD. Below ground, Monastiraki metro station, an interchange of Lines 1 and 3, preserves the ancient vaulted bed of the Eridanos river, crossed by a glass footbridge roughly twenty-four metres long so passengers can see and even hear the water.

Did you know? The square takes its name, 'little monastery', from the small Pantanassa church on its south side. That church is the last surviving fragment of a much larger Byzantine monastery that once occupied the site.
