About Church of Panagia Kapnikarea

An eleventh-century Byzantine church stranded on an island in the middle of Athens' busiest shopping street, saved from the demolition crews by a Bavarian king.

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea is a Byzantine church built in the eleventh century, its main south church dated on stylistic grounds to around 1050. It is dedicated to the Mother of God, commemorating the Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple. The church stands on a small island in the middle of Ermou, the high-traffic shopping street at the edge of Plaka. It is a cross-in-square church whose dome rests on four columns with reused Roman capitals.

During King Otto's Bavarian-led replanning of Athens the church was marked for demolition, but King Ludwig I of Bavaria objected and it was saved. Since 1932 it has belonged to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which supervises it through a curator board of theology professors. The unusual name is often linked to the kapnikon, a Byzantine hearth tax on households with a chimney, though its true origin remains uncertain.

Did you know? When Bavarian planners redrew central Athens, Kapnikarea was condemned as an obstruction. It survived because King Ludwig I of Bavaria personally objected, leaving the eleventh-century church marooned on an island in the middle of Ermou Street.
