About Athens Central Market (Varvakios Agora)
A roaring hall of iron and glass on Athinas Street, where the fish market glitters at the centre and Athens has bought its meat, catch and spices since the 1880s.
The Varvakios Agora is the central municipal food market of Athens, on Athinas Street between Omonoia and Monastiraki, occupying the block bounded by Athinas, Sofokleous, Euripidou and Aiolou streets. It is a wrought-iron-and-glass market hall in the nineteenth-century European tradition, comparable to Les Halles in Paris and the Mercado Central of Valencia. The hall was built on Athinas Street and opened in the mid-1880s, with sources commonly giving 1886, and was designed by the architect Ioannis Koumelis.
The centre of the hall is the fish market, while meat, produce, spices, cheese and other foods fill the surrounding halls and streets. The market takes its name from the national benefactor Ioannis Varvakis, whose endowment is credited by local sources with helping to fund it. Between 1979 and 1996 the market was gradually renovated by the City of Athens together with the Ministry of Culture.
Did you know? The hall belongs to a nineteenth-century family of grand covered markets, built of wrought iron and glass and compared to Les Halles in Paris and the Mercado Central of Valencia. The fish market occupies its central nave.
